The Last Coke Works
WEBMay 20, 2017 · The coke produced in Clairton fuels two other Steel Mon Valley Works plants, the Irvin Works and the Edgar Thomson plant in Braddock. Making coke is a dirty business. Coal is loaded, or "charged" into a series of narrow, oxygenfree ovens, baked at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit for about 18 hours and pushed as a molten mass into railcars .
